·From Bad Call camp looking downstream 220° SW · 15 June 2002 · pm · too late I realise that a low swampy island offers the only chance of a painting site – sweating and cursing we haul the raft back upriver to make a muddy landfall · 16 June · a merganser and four chicks make steadily for the tiny gravel bar on which I sit painting · finally they notice me and with a call like a car with a flat battery mother and chicks flurry off in the opposite direction · the chicks bob like corks ·
