Eight days alone in the cloud forest. Saturday February 27 1993 - up before dawn. load food & equipment onto Mario's horse & walk into the forest. cool & clouds & sun. I arrive Fogdens hut midday. bread & granola stolen by Conti Mundis. draw view W until dusk. Feb 28. across Penas Blancas & uphill to find painting site. build platform from fallen branches - draw view W paint evening sky. after supper paint frog & scorpion by candlelight. March 1. painting all day. Coati Mundis break through roof & trash hut & eat all granola & caheta. March 2. mend roof & paint all day. Coatis break through roof again trash hut & steal food. March 3. mend roof & paint all day. Coatis break through wall. March 4. a days birds: oropendolas green parrots. 3 kinds of humming birds. tailed kites. crested guan. sugar birds. motmot, a toucan perches above my head as I paint. March 5. resolve painting. take notes. March 6. Mario & horse arrive first conversation for 7 days. pack. walk back to village in 7 hours.
