· Looking downstream from a rock 400' above Cottonwood Campground · 6 June 2002 · I reluctantly scramble up the cliffs behind our camp and sit painting baking in the sun until dusk · the sounds of cocktails and laughter torture me as I work · 7 June am · at work by 5.30 I freeze until the sun rises at 6.15 · raft to Ellis and take out · I pack for London to collect my RGS medal ·
Sounds: 5–6pm: insects buzz · birdsong · leaves rattle · traffic hums · a woodpecker hammers · dogs bark and snarl · chain saw · conversation · laughter · clink of glass · mosquitoes whine · airbrakes · an eagle mews ·
