August 8 – 15 2001 · with MB·PM · August 8 · drawing all day in high wind · the paper held down by boulders · an enormous slab falls off an iceberg with a tremendous echoing roar · a 40' tidal wave hits the shore · the changing evening light is a constant source of awe · August 9 · we haul water up to a small fire burning for several days in the muskeg · paint the sky all afternoon until 10.00pm · curried reindeer for supper · in a passing berg an ice cave slowly collapses · August 10 · painting in a cold drizzle · August 11 · drizzle · we find Inuit artefacts in a midden revealed when the tidal wave washed boulders off the cliff edge · the cove silently fills with brash ice – an eerie sight · August 12 · drizzle · we hike up the Kangia to a pristine wilderness · August 13 · drizzle · paint all day in the big tent · August 14 · a clear day · working all day 8.00am – 11.30pm · return to camp frozen and exhausted · August 15 · inundated by a cheery pack of 20 Inuit children who bring me presents of berries and feathers and shout “Tony! Come!” until I join them for herbal tea cooked in a big black pot · painting resolved we pack for the boat to Eqe ·
