23 – 25 September 2002 · with “Sir” Paul · Mr Gibson · Chalky · Metaphysics · each morning walking out to Johnson’s View I call the Cock of the Rock · cupping my hands I emit a series of loud abrupt squawks · when I return after a few minutes this shy & dazzlingly beautiful bird is waiting expectantly in a nearby tree · “The Birds of Venezuela” describes its call as “an unmusical explosive “wong” and a cawing squawk” · a Palm Orchid still growing on a fallen tree puts out a perfect white flower · dazzling in its purity against the dark forest floor it only lasts 1 day before shrivelling & dying ·
