8 – 11 September 2002 · with PB · CJ · CN · MN · VN · MR · FS · we travel alternately by overloaded boat up the Potaro & on foot through primary rainforest · then hike steep trails to the top of the plateau · set up home in a large hut on stilts surrounded by forest · 12 – 18 September · a typical day: up at dawn · wash · breakfast · mist obscures the gorge & intermittent rain · I work on the porch until 11 when it clears · walk out to Boyscout Lookout through cool forest & over hot black rock · set up · noon temp. on my rock 108º · humidity feels 200% · the river thunders 1000' below · breeze blows mist across the landscape · occasional clouds give respite from the heat · work until 5.30 · two toucans sit on a dead branch their distinctive outlines against the setting sun · their 2 note call sounds like opening & closing a rusty hinge · bathe in the river · watch the swifts return to their roost behind the falls · supper · bed · (Arrow donated by the Patamona Tribe) ·
