July 7 – 10 2002 · with PM · dead burnt trees litter the landscape · some still standing, others fallen into piles 6' high · every day several crash to the ground without warning · walking to my painting site July 8 I hear creaking & snapping · a huge tree topples towards me, finally crashing to the ground & snapping into 3 pieces parallel to the path 3' from where I stand · Imperial Geyser is very regular · the pool is quiet & still for 1 minute · a small spout begins to play above the surface · a loud hissing & the geyser shoots skywards groping ever higher · at its zenith for 20 seconds, steam & sulphurous smells are blown across the landscape as it sinks gradually back & disappears leaving the pool quiet again ·
