16 Feb 2001 · the entire river disappears into a hole below 2 enormous boulders · unpack · portage rafts and equipment across 200 yards of slippery rocks · relaunch · clearing tentspace BV finds a beautiful coral snake · J + R machete ½ mile trail upriver to my painting site · my commute: scrambling up rock faces · swinging on lianas · slippery mud slopes above 100' cliffs · wading waist deep through water · 17 Feb · at 5pm I see R · naked · hauling the raft up the rapids to fetch me back to camp for a fish supper of freshly caught mechin and guapote · the rain persists ·
