The Gates of the Rocky Mountains - Looking north from Numbum Rock Copyright © 1999 Tony Foster with BV • August 6,1999 • make camp at Mile 91.8 • all afternoon search the length of the Gates for a painting site • August 7 • the most uncomfortable painting site ever - a steep sided rock with a narrow ledge where I sit marooned for 12 hours each day "no place where a man may put the soal of his foot" (ML) • see a bald eagle perched motionless on a snag • it glides lazily to midriver, swoops, lowers its talons • emerges with a small fish which it must have seen from over 100 yards • August 8 • 9 • 10. work all day imprisoned like Prometheus on my rock • 10th • ranger W takes us home for elk steaks • August ll • W shows us rock drawings under an overhang • pack • canoe 11.7 miles to Holter Lake • takeout • pack the truck • leave as a terrific thunderstorm hits • |
