From above Norway Pass looking across Spirit Lake to Loowit / St. Helens - 9.10.11 August 1996 · with BV · Day 1 · 9:00am · Norway Pass Trailhead · weather hot and sultry · we set off up switchbacks across a bleak hillside covered in broken trees · 10.30 a view of Spirit Lake · the surface half covered in dead trees · set up camp amongst blowdowns · fireweed · dust · walk out to promontory and start drawing · on the log where I sit the temperature rises to 110 F · paint evening sky · Day 2 · BV leaves for Seattle · paint all day · 2 fumerols let off steam on the volcano's NW flank · Day 3 · a cold dawn · Clouds fill the valleys · The flotilla of dead trees moves across Spirit Lake driven by the wind · paint until 4:00 · pack · leave · meet BV at the trailhead for a cold beer.
