Skylight and Lava Tube looking towards Pu'u'o'o · Thursday 2nd October 1997 · with CH and HVO · landed by helicopter I walk with trepidation across the roof of the lava tube · hot underfoot and a smoking landscape shimmering with heat · join the scientists 10' from the skylight · a river of molten lava rushes through at 1170° C · awesome in its speed and volume and brilliant colour · I stand in ferocious heat to draw and make colour notes whilst the scientists collect samples · after an hour the helicopter picks me up and takes me to the trialhead ·
