Hawaii - Molten Lava From Pu'u'o'o flows into the Pacific near Kamokuna · Wednesday 1st October 1997 - ll.00am · start walking ENE where the lava has destroyed the coast road · the day sultry and sun reflecting off the surface of the hot broken pãhoehoe lava walk 4½ miles in 2 hours · arrive too close to entry point · a hissing sound accompanies explosions of steam and gas shooting into the sky · I stand downwind drawing and making notes under a drizzle of dilute acid and fragments of Pelés hair · breathless and scared I retrace my steps ½ mile out of range of the steam cloud and sit and paint foreground · as dusk falls the cloud is lit by the molten lava · I paint until it is too dark to see · on the horizon NW Pu'u'o'o erupts lighting up the night sky · hike back over a broken moonscape with a faltering headlamp ·
