'Looking southwest from Chloride Cliff to Tucky Mountain & the Panamints · Friday 27 September 1991 · with BB, SF, MH · arrive at Chloride Cliff 5200' at dusk · make camp · 28 September · search for painting site · the others leave to place caches of food and water at Salt Creek and Argueberry Point · draw until lunch · start again · a solitary clear starry night · 29 September · up before dawn · drawing all morning · paint sky in the shade of a derelict tin shack · the 3 return · September 30 · a cloudless sky & a pink dawn · noon ground temperature 114° · painting all day · 1st October · a typical day: up before dawn, breakfast · scramble down to painting site · perch on a rock · paint morning shadows · lunch in the shade · 108° ground temperature · lay in Rose Madder wash on Panamints · work on valley floor until 6·30 · supper · 151° rum · bed · 2nd October · paint all day · 3rd October · a cloudless sky. pack. hike W & SW & descend into a canyon to Bell Mine & Keane Wonder Mine where we sit in the cool of a mineshaft for tea · down to Keane Wonder Mill to cache 2 · Shelter in the shade of a rock until 5.00 · bushwack SW into the setting sun crossing shallow washes & hot gravel plains · arrive Salt Creek cache after 5 hours · October 4 · up at 3am · pack · hike SW across a series of low sandy washes & hillocks · after 2 hours cross a crusty salt pan · dawn & the Tucki Mountains turn gold/pink/umber/bleach out · teabreak sitting in a pickle bush · hike across alluvial fans · more salt pan · scrambling over difficult boulder fields & in & out of deep washes as the sun strikes us like a brassy hammer · at mid morning we stumble into a shallow canyon exhausted and looking for shade · a shade temperature of 112°...'
